Burning taxi explodes at Buona Vista; firefighter among 4 injured

SINGAPORE: A taxi caught fire and exploded on Commonwealth Avenue, near Buona Vista MRT station, on Sunday (Apr 30), injuring four people including a firefighter.

The taxi appears to belong to operator Trans-Cab.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire along Commonwealth Avenue, near the junction with North Buona Vista Road, at about 2.15pm.

It sent one fire engine, two fire bikes, one Red Rhino and two ambulances to the location.

A video circulating widely on Whatsapp and social media showed firefighters already battling the blaze before the explosion took place.

Channel NewsAsia reader Jerome Teo, who was at Star Vista at the time, said he heard a “very loud explosion” and that black smoke could be seen from there.

Four men, including an SCDF firefighter, sustained minor injuries and were taken to National University Hospital, SCDF said.

The fire was extinguished by SCDF using two water jets and a compressed air foam backpack.

Preliminary investigations by the SCDF and police revealed that the explosion was likely caused by a road traffic accident.

Investigations by SCDF, the police and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) are ongoing, SCDF said.

Channel NewsAsia has reached out to Trans-Cab for comment.

South Korea already working on reducing trade surplus with US: finance minister

South Korea’s finance minister said on Sunday the government was already working on downsizing its trade surplus with the United States, a reference to U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments Thursday that Washington will renegotiate or scrap the free trade pact the two countries have.

SEOUL: South Korea’s finance minister said on Sunday the government was already working on downsizing its trade surplus with the United States, a reference to U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments Thursday that Washington will renegotiate or scrap the free trade pact the two countries have.

Finance Minister Yoo Il-ho added in televised comments he did not expect the free trade agreement will be terminated. It has been in effect since 2012.

“If one party requests for the trade deal to be terminated, it can be ended six months following the request. But we don’t feel that will happen yet,” said Yoo.

“We feel that there will be talks in any form to renegotiate the terms and we are preparing for them.”

Yoo reiterated his previous comments that Seoul has not yet received formal requests for talks to renegotiate the free trade deal from Washington yet. Trump’s threat to terminate the trade pact in a Reuters interview sent South Korea’s currency and shares down on Friday.

Independence push threatens Hong Kong's autonomy, says Beijing official

The legal chief of Beijing’s representative office in Hong Kong said on Saturday growing calls for independence could make the territory’s current “one country, two systems” constitutional framework unsustainable.

HONG KONG: The legal chief of Beijing’s representative office in Hong Kong said on Saturday growing calls for independence could make the territory’s current “one country, two systems” constitutional framework unsustainable.

Chinese leaders are increasingly concerned about a fledgling independence or secessionist movement in the former British colony of Hong Kong, which returned to mainland rule in 1997 amid promises of wide-ranging autonomy including judicial independence under the formula of “one country, two systems”.

The unusually strong comments by Wang Zhenmin, an official at the Central Liaison Office, China’s top representative office in Hong Kong, came ahead of the 20th anniversary of the handover of power to China.

Hong Kong will be on high alert ahead of the July 1st celebrations when President Xi Jinping is widely expected to attend the swearing in of leader elect Carrie Lam.

Speaking at a seminar in the territory, broadcast on local cable television, Wang attacked the separatist movement and said Hong Kong must act to defend China’s sovereignty.

“The more Hong Kong fails to actively defend (China’s) sovereignty, national security and development interests in accordance with the law, the more wary the country will be about Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy and the ‘two systems’. There would be less room for its autonomy,” Wang said.

He said Beijing was also “disheartened” at the prospect separatists might enter the Hong Kong establishment or education system.

“If the two systems have been severely disrupted or even been used to damage one country, (China) will feel very unsafe…If one’s own existence has become a problem, no nation will continue the arrangements of ‘two systems’,” he said, according to footage of the same speech carried on government funded RTHK.

China has promised Hong Kong’s capitalist system would remain unchanged for 50 years, but it has not made clear what will happen in 2047. Some in Hong Kong fear Beijing may look to impose mainland rule on the territory before then.

Last year, China’s parliament intervened in a Hong Kong court case by passing a ruling on the Basic Law, as the territory’s mini-constitution is known.

It was one of Beijing’s most direct interventions into Hong Kong’s legal and political system since the 1997 handover.

Wang previously said on Friday that Hong Kong should have “respect and awe” for China’s system, to which it would have to adapt, government funded RTHK reported on Friday.

Tesla must complete brake fix to regain top safety rating – Consumer Reports

Tesla Inc needs to complete fixing its Model S sedan emergency braking system to regain Consumer Reports’ top safety rating, the magazine said on Friday, noting that a recent update by the luxury electric car maker was not enough.

DETROIT: Tesla Inc needs to complete fixing its Model S sedan emergency braking system to regain Consumer Reports’ top safety rating, the magazine said on Friday, noting that a recent update by the luxury electric car maker was not enough.

The magazine, which provides an annual rating of vehicles sold in the United States, said on Wednesday the sedan had lost its top ranking in the ultra-luxury car category for failing to install the feature that it had promised to owners as standard equipment.

The Model S fell to third place in Consumer Reports’ ratings behind the Lexus LS made by Toyota Motor Corp and the BMW 7 Series .

Consumer Reports said both Tesla models previously came with standard automatic emergency braking (AEB), a feature that helps reduce accidents. The software issue affects more recent vehicles built since late October 2016.

The magazine said Friday that the Model S sedan it owns had received an automatic emergency braking software update Thursday, but the new version only operates up to 28 miles per hour (45 km).

That is far less than the current 90 mile per hour limit for the prior Tesla AEB system included on vehicles built before late October.

The magazine cited a statement from Tesla that “over the next several weeks” the car maker would increase the speed limit “until it is the most capable of any vehicle in the world.”

The California automaker last week recalled 53,000 Model S and Model X vehicles to fix an unrelated parking brake issue.

Earlier this month, Tesla briefly edged out General Motors Co to become the most valuable U.S. car maker.

CNB adds 5 new psychoactive substances to Class A controlled drugs list

These include four new psychoactive substances that were temporarily listed, as well as a substance commonly known as U-47700.

SINGAPORE: The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) has listed five new psychoactive substances as Class A controlled drugs, meaning it would be an offence to traffic, manufacture, import, export, possess or consume them.

New psychoactive substances (NPS) are those which produce the same or similar effects as controlled drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy, methamphetamine and heroin.

Four of the substances were reclassified as Class A after they were on the temporary list, while another substance commonly known as U-47700 was added to the Class A category, announced CNB on Friday (Apr 28).

NPS can remain on the temporary list for up to 12 months, with the possibility of a 12-month extension, to allow CNB to seize the drugs listed and restrict their circulation. The authority then conducts research and industry consultations before the substance is classified as a controlled drug.

Those found guilty of trafficking Class A controlled drugs face a minimum of five years’ imprisonment and five strokes of the cane. There are stiffer penalties for those who re-offend or sell to young or vulnerable people.

CNB will also be empowered to subject NPS abusers to supervision, commit them to a drug rehabilitation centre for treatment and rehabilitation or charge them in court, the authority stated.

According to CNB, there has been a rapid increase in the number, type and availability of NPS across the globe.

It added that many of these substances have been reported to have no legitimate medical use, and their abuse has been linked to adverse physical and psychological reactions such as paranoia, seizures, hallucinations and even death.
